Upon receiving their approval letters and sharing the exciting news of the award with their community, the PSI Knowledge Translation (KT) Fellows begin preparing to get settled in their place at the starting line. As Dr. Dominique Piquette embarks on her KT Fellowship journey, we asked her a few questions to know her beyond her recipient biography, as well as some notes she could pass on to future applicants.
Please use 3 words to describe how you feel as you begin your KT Fellowship.
Humbled. Curious. Committed.
Why did you apply for the PSI Graham Farquharson KT Fellowship? How does this award align with your current research and career goals?
For the past decade, my work has been situated at the intersection of health professions education, critical care practice, and critical care research. After leading multiple educational research projects focused on postgraduate training, I became increasingly interested in the post-certification phase of practice, where educational research remains limited despite persistent gaps in evidence uptake. My dual involvement in education and critical care research has highlighted the strong alignment between knowledge translation (KT) and continuing professional development (CPD). I believe I am uniquely positioned to develop KT strategies that leverage CPD to narrow the gap between evidence and practice, particularly in non-academic settings where access to formal and informal educational opportunities is often limited. Ultimately, my goal is to make it easier for clinicians, patients, and families to understand the rationale behind adopting—or de-adopting—clinical practices, enabling evidence-informed decisions that improve the quality of care and patient outcomes.
What are 3 to 5 general tips and notes you would pass on to those preparing their KT Fellowship application?
- Clearly explain to the reviewers that your work is Knowledge Translation, not simply clinical or educational research – a focus on implementation is important.
- Tell a compelling career story – explain how your prior work and career path led you to KT.
- Create authentic partnerships which engage teams and individuals meaningfully from the beginning.
- Make the impact tangible – if PSI funds you, what changes in Ontario healthcare and for Ontario patients?
