For Applicants

What does the Foundation do?

The Foundation is a not-for- profit organization dedicated to funding medical research operating grants and hands-on education and training for practising physicians.

Who can apply for support?

You must be a physician in the province of Ontario to apply for support.  We do not provide funding to other organizations.  Please see our Guidelines for more specific information.

When, how can I apply for funding?

The Foundation has four granting cycles annually, and you will learn the results within six months of submission. Please see application procedures below.

When will I learn the results of my application?

The internal review Grants Committee will consider your application within six months of submission, and we aim to release all funding decisions within 10 business days of the internal review committee meeting date.

How will I learn of the results of my application?

We will email a grant offer or decline letter to the address listed on your application; moreover, we post the results on our website.

Application Procedures

When should my application arrive?

All applications are to be completed using the online application system. There are no submission deadlines. Exceptions: an application for an Educational Fellowship can be submitted via email at any time; please see specific details about submission for the PSI Graham Farquharson Knowledge Translation Fellowship and for Mental Health Research.

What are your CV requirements?

Each CV is to be made up of two components: the first component is to be limited to three pages and will include all relevant information such as education, appointments, committees, etc. The second component is to be a list of publications, presentations, grants received, etc. for the past 5 years only. Both components are required.

Who is the Grant Administrator?

The Grant Administrator is the individual from the sponsoring institution’s research finance office, who will receive and administer the funds, and ensure the institution will follow the Foundation’s financial criteria.

Are scanned applications allowed?

The Foundation does not accept scanned copies of applications; however, if there are one or two components which require scanning to be included, this is permitted. As electronic signatures are now being accepted, we acknowledge that this page will need to be scanned.

When should my start date be?

Your proposed start date should be approximately 6 months after submission; you will receive funding decision within 6 months.  Also, an approved study must begin within 6 months of receiving funding; for example, an application received in March should have a start date no earlier than September and no later than the following March.

Can either I or a co-investigator be paid from this grant?

No, an individual cannot be paid personnel and also be named as a principal investigator/applicant, co-investigator, or collaborator.

Can a resident or student be named as a co-PI, co-investigator, collaborator?

No.

Can a resident or medical student be paid personnel on a Foundation funded grant?

No.

For Grantees

What do I do after I receive a grant offer letter?

The grant offer letter will outline the documentation we require before any funds can be released.  Once you provide all the required documentation, we will release funds to the sponsoring institution, as indicated on your application.

What do I do when my study is over?

The Foundation requires a final accounting statement from the sponsoring institution and a completed Final Report form; moreover, the Foundation expects PDF copies of all publications resulting from your grant.

How do I acknowledge the Foundation’s support in publications and presentations?

Please download our logo for use in any presentations and acknowledge the support of the physicians of Ontario through funding by the PSI Foundation in all publications.

How do I know what the Foundation expects from me?

We will provide a Guidelines for Grant Recipients document outlining such requirements.  Briefly, the Foundation expects a final accounting statement from the sponsoring institution, a completed Final Report form, and PDFs of all abstracts and publications.
